My family member is charged with a crime. What can I do?
It's often the case that a loved one or close friend has been arrested on criminal charges and you want to help. Be careful speaking with them on jail phone calls, which are often recorded, and contact an attorney on their behalf who can help.
What are the stages of a criminal case?
Every criminal case will have an Arraignment and Pretrial phase where the parties try to resolve the case without a trial. Class A misdemeanor and felony cases also hold more hearings before the Arraignment to protect you from frivolous charges. Read our recent post on the life of a criminal case for more details.
Will my driver license be suspended?
Your driver license may be suspended if you have been arrested on allegations of DUI. In addition, certain convictions can carry a mandatory suspension or may indirectly suspend your license due to the accumulation of points. Contact an attorney immediately to try to avoid these consequences.
Can I read the police report and watch body cam footage?
Yes. The prosecution is required to hand over all evidence they have against you, including police reports, witness statements, and available body camera footage. You have the right to review this evidence together with your attorney to build a defense.
Will my court hearing be in person or by WebEx?
Judges have different preferences when it comes to holding court in person or virtually. If attending court in person poses a particular hardship to you, we can request permission to attend virtually even if the judge usually prefers parties to appear in person.
When is my next court hearing?
You can search for hearings scheduled within the next 30 days at the Utah state court website. It is possible to search by case number, party name, or judge name.
